Here is my itinerary for the next 2.5 weeks...
Saturday, Jan 24th: Depart Washington, DC for Addis Adaba, Ethiopia
Sunday: Spend the night in Addis with a friend from my DC church who now lives there.
Monday: Fly from Addis to Djibouti, spend the night with my missionary friend in town. Eat lots of dust.
Tuesday: Fly from Djibouti back to Addis, spending the night there again (with Carter, who arrives this day).
Wednesday, Jan 28th: Carter and I fly to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, meet up with the rest of our group, enjoy our last nice meal and bed for awhile.
Thursday: Start the Kilimanjaro Climb. Machame Gate to Machame Camp. 6000 to 10,200ft. Distance: 18km. Hiking Time: 5-7 hours. Habitat: Montane Forest
Friday: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
10,200ft to 12,600ft. Distance: 9km. Walking Time: 4-6 hours. Habitat: Moorland
Saturday (Jan 31): Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
12,600ft to 12,700ft. Distance: 15 km. Walking Time: 5-7 hours. Habitat: Semi-desert
Sunday: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
12,700ft to 13,800ft. Distance: 7 km. Hiking Time: 4 hours. Habitat: Alpine Desert
Monday: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
13,800ft to 15,100ft. Distance: 7km. Hiking Time: 4 hours. Habitat: Alpine Desert
Here you take a long rest and prepare for the midnight ascent to the summit.
Tuesday (Feb 3): Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
15,100ft to 19,300ft (and down to 10,200ft). Distance: 7km ascent / 23km descent. Hiking Time:6- 8 hours ascent / 7-8 hours descent. Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit.
Wednesday: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
10,200ft to 6000ft. Distance: 15 km. Hiking Time: 3-4 hours. Habitat: Forest
Hotel/Alternative Hotel for overnight. And a shower, praise God.
Thursday (Feb 5): Beginning of safaris...Lake Manyara
The drive from Moshi to Manyara National Park, can take approximately 4 hours. After a picnic lunch, you spend the late afternoon with a game drive, which is also the best time to view animals in this park. When you approach it from the east, the Rift Valley escarpment looms on the horizon forming an impressive backdrop to the lake.
Friday: Serengeti
Drive to Serengeti National Park via Olduvai Gorge. Olduvai George is an archaeological site, in which some of the earliest human fossils were discovered.
Saturday: Serengeti
After breakfast, venture into the corners of wilderness Serengeti for a full day game viewing in the park.
Sunday: Serengeti to Ngorongoro
After a morning game drive in the Serengeti, the afternoon is driving to Ngorongoro.
Monday: Ngorongoro
After breakfast, enjoy a half-day game drive in Ngorongoro Crater.
Tuesday: Back to Moshi, and on to the plane home. And about 2,000 work emails sure to be waiting.
